Whether it’s a scrape or a crack, damage to your car’s exterior can hinder its performance. Learn about the different types of car bumper damage.

Even the smallest scratch on your car’s exterior can be an eyesore. Believe it or not, getting into a minor accident or hitting a curb can cause severe car bumper damage that puts your car’s structural integrity at risk. To mitigate costly repairs, discover the most common types of exterior damage and how to properly restore your vehicle.

1. Scratches and Scuffs

Scratches and scuffs often occur when your car brushes against a wall, another vehicle, or loose debris. While they look like small blemishes, deep scratches can expose the underlying material of your bumper to weather damage, rust, and corrosion. Deeper gouges require professional care, but touch-up paint is a useful item to store in your car for a quick fix.

2. Dents

Parking lot mishaps and low-speed collisions commonly cause dents in bumpers. These dents can weaken the structural integrity of your bumper and reduce its ability to absorb impact in an accident. You can use suction tools to pull out small dents, but larger dents will require you to repair or replace your car bumper.

3. Cracks

Cracks in your car’s bumper can result from heavier impacts, such as rear-end collisions or hitting a curb at high speed. Ignoring these cracks can cause them to deepen and increase the risk of structural damage in future accidents. Specialists often use plastic welding techniques or replacements to fix larger cracks, so this isn’t a DIY repair. If your bumper is cracked, schedule maintenance promptly to prevent further deterioration.

4. Detached Bumpers

If your bumper is hanging off or detached following a collision, it is a safety hazard. A detached bumper can scrape along the road, damage other parts of your car, and even fly off at high speeds. While you can temporarily secure your bumper using zip ties or tape, this type of severe car bumper damage requires professional repairs.

5. Paint Peeling

Your bumper’s paint can chip away due to the weather, a minor collision, or small flying debris. Peeling paint looks unattractive and exposes your bumper to elements that could further damage it. A fresh paint touch-up keeps your bumper durable and looking great.

6. Fading and Discoloration

Prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight or extreme weather conditions cause your bumper’s paint or finish to fade. Rain, snow, and UV rays can leave your bumper looking dull and worn.

Regular waxing and applying UV protectants can protect your bumper from the elements and preserve its appearance. In addition, try to park your car under the shade or in garages whenever possible to avoid further discoloration.

If your bumper is damaged, you and your passengers could be at risk. Your car bumper absorbs the impact of head-on collisions, and even a small crack could cause the structure to collapse. Avoid this by seeking professional help whenever you notice a dent, crack, or scratch on your car’s exterior.
