A prenatal appointment with a midwife is a unique experience for many women, as they receive thorough examination and support. Learn more here.

Are you an expecting mother? Congratulations! Pregnancy is one of the most exciting and fulfilling journeys a woman can experience. However, it comes with its fair share of challenges and uncertainties, especially for first-time mothers.

As your pregnancy progresses, you’ll find yourself in need of routine appointments with your preferred provider, whether OB or midwife, to ensure a safe and healthy pregnancy. But what exactly should you expect from your midwife during a prenatal appointment? Below, we take a closer look at the role of a midwife and the various things you can anticipate during these visits.

The Role of a Midwife

Midwives are healthcare professionals who specialize in providing care to pregnant women before, during, and after childbirth. Their role is to provide personalized care, support, and education to expecting mothers, empowering them to make informed decisions about their pregnancy and childbirth.

Midwives work closely with doctors and other healthcare providers to ensure a smooth and safe delivery for both the mother and the baby. One of the first steps you should take when finding out you’re pregnant is deciding if you want a midwife assisting you in your prenatal and postnatal care and if their values align with yours.

The First Prenatal Appointment

Your first prenatal appointment will typically take place around eight weeks after your last menstrual period. This appointment is crucial, as it allows your midwife to gather essential information about you and your pregnancy. During this visit, your midwife will ask for your medical history, including any previous pregnancies, current health conditions, and medications you’re taking. They may also perform a physical exam, including measuring your weight and blood pressure.

Subsequent Prenatal Appointments

After your first prenatal appointment, you’ll have regular checkups with your midwife throughout your pregnancy. Your midwife will schedule these appointments every four weeks until 28 weeks of pregnancy, then every two weeks until 36 weeks, and finally weekly until delivery. You and your midwife will have the power to create an appointment schedule that serves you best, including if these appointments take place at home or a medical facility.

During these visits, your midwife will monitor your health and the baby’s gestational development by measuring a series of health markers. Fundal height (distance between pubic bone and uterus in centimeters), fetal heartbeat, and general maternal well-being are all common topics during the subsequent prenatal appointments. The midwife will also discuss any concerns or questions you may have and provide guidance on a healthy lifestyle, nutrition, and prenatal exercises.

Additional Tests

Apart from guiding routine checkups, your midwife may order additional tests throughout your pregnancy to ensure everything is progressing smoothly. A midwife’s supply bag features many advanced tools and devices, equipping them with the skills to assess your prenatal well-being thoroughly and accurately. They may use these advanced tools to complete tests for blood work, urine analysis, ultrasounds, and genetic testing. Your midwife will explain the purpose of each test and the device they use and address any concerns you may have before proceeding.

Closing Thoughts

You can expect many things of your midwife during prenatal appointments, from basic assessments and conversation to more advanced testing and diagnostics. Midwives play a critical role in pregnancy and childbirth and are highly trained and respected professionals. Should you choose to hire a midwife for your pregnancy, you can rest assured that you and your baby’s well-being are in the best hands medicine has to offer.
