While you may not connect with your ex-spouse on many things today, you both have a shared priority: your child’s health, safety, and well-being.

Parenting is hard. Co-parenting? Even harder. When you toss safety decisions into the mix, things can quickly go from “We’ve got this” to “We need to talk.” Establishing boundaries around your child’s well-being requires patience and clear communication. Establish safety rules with a co-parent successfully, and you’ll create an environment where your child feels secure, no matter whose house they’re in. Let’s look at how you can tackle this challenge head-on and avoid unnecessary drama.

Begin With a Conversation, Not a Debate

It’s tempting to dig your heels in when it comes to something you feel strongly about. But brace yourself—that’s exactly how arguments start and solutions stop. Instead, kick off the conversation by asking open-ended questions. What are your ex’s primary safety concerns? What’s their rationale behind certain rules? When you start from a place of curiosity, it builds trust and shifts the discussion from combative to collaborative.

Highlighting shared goals is also a great icebreaker. You both want what’s best for your child (even if your definitions of “best” don’t always align).

Define Non-Negotiables (but Stay Flexible)

Every parent has those rules that are simply non-negotiable, and that’s OK. Maybe it’s helmet use, car seat safety, or internet restrictions. Lay those out honestly and explain why they matter so much to you. Then, invite your co-parent to share their non-negotiables too. Be ready to compromise on the smaller stuff so that you can both maintain authority on the critical safety rules.

For instance, if your ex-spouse insists on no TV during dinner but you allow it occasionally, consider giving them the win there. Picking your battles allows you to reserve energy for the conversations that truly impact your child’s safety.

Address Complexities As They Come Up

Discussions of safety are going to evolve as your child grows up. One safety disagreement that might pop up as children age is the question of what activities are safe. You may prefer your child not go on out-of-state trips. Your ex might ask that your child not have sleepovers. Finding a balance between all parental concerns and the child’s personal interests can be hard. Take, for example, a child interested in extreme sports like dirt biking and UTV riding. There are many misconceptions about off-roading in these vehicles, but their risks are not a myth. If your child brings up this interest with either parent, it’s important to sit down and discuss how you each feel about it.

Conversations like these may take time and a few follow-ups. Focus on your child’s best interests, providing them the opportunity to explore their passions without compromising their safety.

Keep Communication Respectful And Ongoing

It might feel easier to hammer out one big “safety plan” and forget about it, but parenting doesn’t work that way. Kids grow. Rules need tweaking. Situations change. Setting up regular check-ins with your ex about safety matters can prevent potential clashes.

Approach these check-ins like mini collaboration sessions, not interrogations. Keep your tone respectful and avoid rehashing old arguments. If needed, use text or email for particularly sensitive topics to give both of you some space to think before replying.

Make Peace With Imperfection

Co-parenting with your ex-spouse is never going to be perfectly seamless. There will be moments that frustrate, stretch, and test your patience. Keep the bigger picture in mind. Your job isn’t to enforce perfection; it’s to provide a safe, loving environment for your child.

Keeping Your Kids Safe

Co-parenting is full of curveballs, but there’s beauty in mastering this balancing act together. When you establish safety rules with a co-parent, you’re giving your child stability amidst a shared life. Focus on staying consistent, open-minded, and solution-oriented.
