If you have had trouble getting your baby to fall asleep, you may be feeling at your wits’ end. If this is the case, follow these tips for coping.

Sleepless nights can take a toll on a parent, both physically and emotionally. If you had a life before kids that you still long for in some ways, don’t shame yourself for that. The transition to parenthood has its fair share of difficulties. Some of these difficulties may involve a lack of sleep and missing the nights when you could get a full night’s rest.

If this relates to you, don’t worry—there’s hope! Learn how to cope with a baby that won’t sleep through the night.

Sips of Caffeine

Caffeine is a staple in most tired parents’ diets. Of course, you want to try to avoid drinking too much for your body’s overall health, but it doesn’t hurt to have a cup here and there for an added boost. If you already rely on this, then maybe consider having a coffee pot that automatically brews in the morning. This can give you something to look forward to when you wake up earlier than you hoped. You won’t have to set out to make yourself a pot, either. Simply set it up the night before and enjoy an automatically brewed cup when you wake.

Ask for Help

There’s no shame in asking for help. If you have family nearby, it doesn’t hurt to ask them to come over and help when necessary. And if you don’t have family nearby, try to schedule babysitters or local help so that you can catch a break now and again. Use this assistance as a chance to take a nap or rest instead of going out.

If you’re a single parent, know that you are seen. You may feel exhausted not having any immediate help in the home. If this is you, consider asking your local community for resources that you can afford in order to get the help you need.

Counseling Services

Sleep deprivation can contribute to overall depression and anxiety struggles. It’s no secret that postpartum recovery is a struggle. The fourth trimester is no joke, and parents around the world have to work through this trimester, which usually involves mental health battles. Hormone levels and life changes contribute to these struggles.

It takes a strong person to reach out for help and counseling services. Pat yourself on the back if you take the step to have some outside help. Professionals will be able to help you cope with sleepless nights and adjust to not having time to yourself. They can also help you understand some reasons why your baby may only be taking naps instead of sleeping.

Learning how to cope with a baby that doesn’t sleep through the night is difficult. You may have heard it before, but try to remember that while the days are long, the years are short. You will get through this season, no matter how exhausted you may feel. Don’t be afraid to ask for help so that you can be the best parent you can be.
