A leather sofa is a significant investment. So before you buy, take a look at these things to know before purchasing a leather sofa for your home.

Many homeowners prefer leather sofas over other types of sofas because they’re classy, elegant, and can last for years. They’re also considered good investments, provided you know how to retain the vintage appearance with proper maintenance. As with buying other products, it’s not just the price you have to consider, as there are other things to know before purchasing a leather sofa. Let’s discuss more of this below.

Leather Types

There are different types of leather that make up furniture. Some of the most popular types of leather include pigmented, aniline, and semi-aniline leather. Read on to learn more about these types of leather.

  • Pigmented leather: This leather is highly durable and common in sofas and other furniture. The manufacturer uses polymer coatings with pigments that protect against fading, discoloration, and markings to create it. These coatings also result in printed, plain, or embossed appearances.
  • Aniline leather:This leather type is more natural looking and colored using Aniline dye, hence the name. It’s beautiful and highly comfortable to sit on but requires stringent maintenance, as it absorbs liquid and soils easily. It’s also susceptible to fading and drying out when exposed to UV light. Luckily, there are plenty of tips for caring for and maintaining leather furniture that you can use to prevent these issues.
  • Semi-aniline leather:Semi-aniline leather has a light surface coating that contains pigment. It makes this type of leather more durable and easier to maintain. Semi-aniline leather has a more uniform color compared to aniline leather and retains its natural appearance over time.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Although there are durable leather sofas or couches that you can purchase, you must learn how to maintain them. Other things to know before purchasing a leather sofa include cleaning and treating it to preserve its beauty and natural appearance. Some leather sofas are high maintenance compared to others, so you should consider these things before purchasing.

Positions for Your Sofa

Another thing you must keep in mind is that leather can dry out and quickly deteriorate with continued exposure to UV rays. The sun dries out the natural oils in leather, leading to it hardening or even showing some cracks. Place your leather sofa in a shaded area or a spot where there are curtains to keep it out of the sun’s reach.

Value of Leather Sofas

If you’re choosing between a leather or fabric sofa, you should select a leather sofa because it’s durable and will look elegant in any home theme you have. Leather sofas may be more expensive, but it’s all worth it since they can last three to four times longer than any standard fabric sofa.
