Have you wondered what you should do if you love to travel and your dog doesn’t? It’s not easy leaving them behind, but we have simple solutions.

The idea of leaving your dog behind while you enjoy your weekend getaway is so heartbreaking, especially for first-time fur parents. It may be the first time you’ll separate yourself from your beloved pup, but know that you can’t be with your dog all the time.

There will be times that you have to be apart, so you have to start training your dog to be alone or be okay without you for a time. It would be nice if you could also take them to the beach or somewhere far away, but that is not always the case. What should you do if you love to travel and your dog doesn’t? Keep reading to find out!

Board Your Dog

You won’t feel guilty pampering yourself in a luxurious hotel if you also send your dog on a staycation that is mainly for dogs. Check your dog into a boarding facility so that while you enjoy your travels, your dog is enjoying their kind of self-pampering.

Pet boarding is when your dog stays in a boarding facility with other dogs while you are on vacation. This place will be their temporary home. Your dog will have their personal kennel, and staff will always be available to walk your dog and play with them.

Prepare Your Dog for Boarding

If this is the first time you’re leaving your dog, separation anxiety can be challenging to overcome. If you plan on traveling, you need to prepare your dog for those times that you’ll be away. Schedule a date with your dog or spend more time with your dog before you leave.

It’s time to write down everything that your dog likes and dislikes so that the boarding facility knows how to handle your dog. Visit the kennel or pet sitter once or twice before your departure. This visit is the only way your dog will get to familiarize themself with the place and the people inside the facility. See how your dog interacts with the staff, and test your dog’s reaction when you leave them there for a moment.

Send Familiar Items With Your Dog

It takes three weeks for a dog to get familiar with a new environment. You can help your dog feel at home in their temporary home by sending ordinary items like their favorite toy, blanket, or dog bowl.

Ensure that your dog sleeps in their bed from home, even if they stay inside the boarding kennel. Without a familiar, cozy bed, your dog won’t be able to sleep in an unfamiliar place. Everyday items can make your dog more comfortable, even if you’re absent from their sight.

Sending your dog to a pet boarding facility is the best answer to your question about what to do if you love to travel and your dog doesn’t. There is no need to sacrifice what you love because you worry about leaving your dog alone. Pet boarding will let you have your much-needed self-care with the assurance that your dog is in safe hands. Also, make sure that you prepare them for boarding and send familiar items to get your dog comfortable in the new environment.
