Nervous about heading home after giving birth? You’re better equipped than you realize, but here are some postpartum tips to help you with your first week home.
Congratulations, mama! You’ve brought a tiny human into the world, and now life feels like a mix of awe, exhaustion, and figuring out what “normal” even means anymore. The first week home postpartum is magical but also quite challenging. Between setting up the perfect swaddle and trying to remember the last time you ate, showered, or fed the baby, it’s a lot.
While every mom’s experience is unique, some tips make this transitional week easier (and dare we say, even enjoyable). Grab your coffee, and read on for advice to help you thrive during that oh-so-special first week postpartum.
1. Accept Help Like It’s a Luxury You Deserve
You might feel like you should do it all, but spoiler alert: you can’t, and you shouldn’t. Whether someone offers to drop off meals, pick up groceries, or even just hold the baby while you shower, try to say yes. This isn’t the time for humility. You aren’t a burden. Now is the time to ask for and accept help.
Pro tip? Have a list of small tasks ready for anyone asking, “What do you need?” Delegating is a superpower.
2. Comfort Chic: Dress for Yourself, Not Just for Zoom
Those designer loungewear pieces you splurged on? Now’s their time to shine. You don’t need to wear sweats that scream “college dorm room” when you can rock cozy cashmere sets. Feeling put-together boosts confidence, even if you’re just chilling on the couch with your baby. Plus, it’s proof you can balance style and mom life.
All the people who say getting ready helped them postpartum weren’t lying. There’s power in getting out of your pajamas each morning, even if it’s just putting on a different pair.

3. Limit Social Media (Seriously, Do It!)
It’s tempting to scroll Instagram at 3 a.m. while feeding your bundle of joy, but beware of falling into the comparison trap. Seeing other moms with Pinterest-perfect nurseries or a freezer full of milk a week after birth can lead to unnecessary stress.
For example, there are a lot of “power pumpers” on social media, but one of the most common lactation myths is that what you pump accurately reflects your milk supply. Social media may have you believe otherwise. Try to live in your own bubble of cozy chaos. Unplug, focus on your baby (and yourself), and remember that social media shows the highlights. You know your baby best.
4. Hydration and Snacks Are Non-Negotiables
Breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, or just navigating sleepless nights requires energy. Keep a tumbler filled with water and stock up on snack trays. Think charcuterie boards, but make them postpartum-friendly with trail mix, dark chocolate, and cheese cubes. One of the most important self-care strategies postpartum has to deal with getting all the nutrition you need. Now is not the time to cut calories!
5. Lower Expectations, Raise Your Feet
Spoiler alert number two? Your house might look like a baby store exploded. That’s okay. Don’t pressure yourself to have everything spotless. Spend this week bonding with your baby instead of worrying about folding laundry. Light a fancy candle, sink into the couch, and remind yourself that taking it easy is part of the recovery process.
Stepping into motherhood is no small feat, but we promise you’re doing amazing. Drop the guilt, forget the comparisons, and remember that this first week is about finding your rhythm. Celebrate the small wins, like your first successful diaper change at 3 a.m., and celebrate yourself—we both know no one else is doing it quite like you.
